CHAPTER ONE
SIGHTSEEING
One of the many things that we anticipate when we visit a new country is the attractions. People visiting Copenhagen for the first time should know the places that are a must see in the town. Regardless of how many times you have been to the beautiful city, you would want to get to these eco-friendly locations over and over again.

Hovedbanegården
Hovedbanegården is a bus station in Copenhagen. It is also the main train station in the town. You can get both local and international trains in the station and there is a bustle around that makes you want to stay longer. There are great shops and restaurants around Hovedbanegården if you have a moment to explore. Moving around the town through the buses and trains at this station allows you to cut off some carbon emissions and protect the air in Copenhagen.

Tivoli Gardens
Trivoli is a walk away from HovedbanegÃ¥rden. It is a must see park for everyone who wants an incredibly great time at Copenhagen. You can take a roller coaster ride and sit in at the live entertainment program streaming right there at the park! People who visit Trivoli have lots of fun within a natural environment. The Townhall
The Townhall is a beautiful architectural building that welcomes you to enjoy elegance and even the opportunity to be in a tower! Admittance into the hall is free and its beauty keeps you in for hours. You will lose track of time in this elegant building. The Townhall is around the city center so the view from the tower can be quite majestic. It also house Jens Olsen’s World Clock, an architectural beauty. It is eco-friendly too since you do not need any vehicles to explore the hall.

Strøget
Strøget is the place to get virtually everything that you want while you are in Copenhagen. It is more than that though because it is a really long street with lots of places to shop. You are sure to get the best things on this street. Even if you did not consciously make the journey to this famous shopping street, you will end up here if you stay long enough in Copenhagen. You are sure to need something that you would only be able to get here. Aside shopping, the street has a reputation for being one of Europe’s longest pedestrian streets! Shopping here at Strøget will help you emit less carbon as you would be walking. You will not notice though as there is a lot of good things down here to keep your eyes occupied. You will find exotic brands on Strøget.

Storkespringvandet
Storkespringvandet is a fountain surrounded with lots of restaurants and bars. It was a present given to a crown prince and crown princess in honor of their silver wedding anniversary in 1894. The fountain lights up with crowds and is a great place to sit in and enjoy some music performance from Copenhagen’s very best. Storkespringvandet is iconic and the joy around the place is contagious. It’s a silver fountain depicting three storks that are about to fly away. You have no need for cars around the fountain as you can sit at the many restaurants and have a great time.

Storkespringvandet is lying on a street that’s usually busy but where you can get a great view around 7pm. The fountain is accessible at all times of the day.

Christiansborg Slot
From its stables to its royal reception and throne room, this government and palace building is a must visit at Copenhagen. There is also a tower and an opportunity to feel what the Danish royal family is like. This is a great place to spend some of your Copenhagen time. The palace itself is beautiful and the fact that it houses the government also makes it incredibly stunning. You will not need a car to see the building thus making it eco-friendly. You can also enjoy a boat ride at the Canal Nybrogade.

You can have a great time at the royal reception rooms, the royal kitchen, the ruins, the royal stables and the palace chapel. The opening days differ depending on the activity you want to perform at the palace but be sure that Sunday is a great day to be at the castle!

Børsen
Børsen is a waterfront building that previously housed the stock exchange of Denmark. The building is imposing. Although you cannot get into the building whenever you want, there are events that allow the public in. The architecture of this building comes from the 17th century and if you are looking to see great landmarks in Denmark, this would be one of them.

Kongens Nytorv
Kongens Nytorv is a beautiful square lying in the heart of Copenhagen. It houses the royal theatre, the D’Angleterre Hotel and the Charlottenborg Academy. The square is surrounded by beautiful buildings and hosts lots of people who want a great time. The square has a revered equesrian statue that is the oldest royal sculpture in Copenhagen. You get to participate in an environment that is generally friendly while avoiding any behavior that produces pollutants.

Nyhavn
The beautiful old houses look good as restaurants and light up this ancient port. Nyhavn was a dock filed with sailors, pubs and alehouses. Today, it is one of the most exciting sightseeing locations in Copenhagen. You can join the people tasting out Copenhagen dishes in the restaurants and you can relax while you listen to jazz music.
Nyhavn was home to the famous Danish writer, Hans Christian Andersen who lived at three locations in this beautiful old port. He wrote his fairytales “The Princess and the Pea”, “The Tinderbox” and “Little Claus and Big Claus” from Nyhavn. You can pick any of these books while you are here and enjoy the connection with the local life.
Nyhavn is known as one of the best places to get great entertainment in Copenhagen. The houses are brightly colored and their architecture comes from the 17th and 18th century. A time out at Nyhavn is sheer bliss as there is a waterfront and canal. You can participate in boating or ride in one of the ships at the waterfront.
Nyhavn is a location you should not miss because it is close to several other attractions. The Rosenborg castle is just a fourteen minute walk from Nyhavn. You can visit Church of Our Saviour, the Royal Danish Playhouse where you can watch a show and Bridge Street Kitchen where you can get some delicious Danish street food. Nyhavn is a sustainable location because several other attractions are within walking distance and if you ever need a car, there is public transport close by. If you book an apartment around Nyhavn, you can get a good view of the waterfront from your room!

Amaliekaj
This is an exotic location with great views of the harbor and of the opera. Amaliehaven was founded in 1983. It got the name Amaliekaj because it is very close to Amalienborg Palace where the Queen lives. Amaliekaj is filled with sculptures made by Arnaldo Pomodoro, an Italian artist. On the sides of the park, there are hedges and wall. This separates Amaliekaj from the harbor on one of the sides, and from the street on the other side. There are various flowers present in this garden, with beautiful colors and shapes. Amaliekaj forms a green oasis in the middle of the city, and it is a perfect place as it is protected from noise and wind.

Amalienborg Slot
Amalienborg is a major work of Nicolai Eigtved a Danish architect. It was constructed in the 1750s, and four palaces surround the Palace Square. These palaces were actually built for some four high ranking aristocrats. Then some time later in 1794, the old Christiansborg Palace, home to the Royal Family was burnt down, and the Royal Family had to move to Amalienborg, and this has been their home ever since. Amalienborg is situated between the harbor and the city. The Royal Guards at Amalienborg changes every two hours, and the Palace is not open to the public.
Christian VIII’s Palace serves as an abode to the Amalienborg museum. Here, you can embark on a Royal voyage up to 150 years of monarchy back. In this museum, you are given the opportunity to visit the private chambers of former kings and queens, and the amazing thing is that these chambers are maintained exactly how these kings and queens lived in them.
Christain VII’s Palace is where Queen Margrethe II receives her guest, and it also serves as the official reception. The Palace was initially built in 1750 to 1754 for Count Adam Gottlob Moltke.
Christain IX’s Palace, official residence to Her Majesty, Queen Margrethe II and the Prince Consort, has a flag that when raised it signifies that the Queen is in the building. This Palace is not open to the public.
Christain VIII’s Palace which serves as an abode to the Amalienborg museum is a place you should go. It is open to the public, and you would definitely enjoy the Museum.

Den lille Havfrue
Den lille Havfrue, one of the most famous tourist attractions in Copenhagen is over a hundred years old. It is a statue by Edvard Eriksen, and it is made of bronze and granite. The statue was inspired by a fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen about a mermaid who let everything go just so she could unite with a young and handsome prince on land.

Kastellet
The Kastellet is a 17th century star-shaped fortress. The Kastellet is home for military barracks and office, and it is the most popular green space in Copenhagen. The Kastellet was once played an important role in fortifying the city, but it now a place where you can jog, cycle and relax. In Kastellet, you would find three museums that cover different histories.

Rosenborg Slot
Rosenborg Slot is a Renaissance castle which was built by Christian IV. It is over 400 years old, and it became Christian IV favourite castle. It was used as venue for so many important events. At Rosenborg Slot, visitors can travel back up to 400 years ago. They can browse through the possessions of Christian IV and all his heirs. With this, they can get a picture of the festive periods and the everyday normal life of over 400 years back. Rosenborg Slot literally served as Christian IV summer home, and today the upper rooms are strategically arranged. They are hosing the portraits and furnishings of every monarch from Christian IV to Frederik VII. The basement of Rosenborg Slot is home to stunning crown jewels. Among these treasures are Christain IV’s own majestic crown, and Christian III’s jewel-studded sword.
The Rosenborg Slot was constructed in the Dutch Renaissance style, and the construction took place between 1606 and 1633. The Rosenborg Slot is just an example of Christian IV’s numerous buildings and projects. It has been expanded so many times adding new features, and it finally ended up in its current state in the year 1624. The Long Hall which is located on the third floor was also completed in this same year. Christian V modernized the hall with twelve tapestries which portrays the King’s victories in the Scanain War.
Rosenborg Slot was used as the royal residence only twice after the reign of Frederik IV, and these times were during an emergency. The Coronation Chair is one of the main attraction of the Rosenborg Slot.

Botanisk Have
Botanisk Have is a botanical garden located strategically close to The Munch Museum and The Natural History Museum. It is the University of Copenhagen’s own garden! So, you are getting to the school at the same time. An afternoon at the Botanisk Have therefore meant an afternoon of bliss. You will be seeing some beautiful flowers at the Have and exceptional plants. There is also a garden that contains waterfalls. There is no better way to spend the day than to get to the garden. It is also calm and immediately gives you a feeling of relief from the hustle and bustle in town. If you really want to have a good time in Copenhagen, you should not miss this location.

Torvehallerne
Torvehallerne is a fresh food market that has been described as the very best in town. If you want quality food while you are at Copenhagen, you must visit Torvehallerne. It has big halls with nice places that you can eat. It also has lots of stalls that are carrying quality fresh food produce including fruits and vegetables. Torvehallerne is organized in a way that you can’t miss the food.

Vor Frue Kirke
This is a beautiful cathedral in Copenhagen. It is serene and peaceful. There is the sculpture of Christ and the twelve apostles decorating the cathedral. The cathedral is close to Strøget and you should get to see it while you are at Copenhagen. It contains a gift shop museum and people often miss the stairs but don’t forget to check out what’s lying upstairs.

 GrÃ¥brødretorv
This is a beautiful square lying close to Strøget. There are warm restaurants and cafes lying around it where you can relax too. The square will bring some of Copenhagen’s history closer to you. As a tourist, that’s something beautiful to anticipate. Walking around the square and visiting the cafes is a sustainable way to enjoy your stay while you are in Copenhagen.

Vor Frelsers Kirke
This is a church in Copenhagen. It is also known as Our Saviour’s Church. It is also a major tourist attraction. The architecture dates back centuries ago and you will love the view at the church. It is mostly built with brick and even the altar is such a great thing to see. There is a magnificent organ at the west wall of the church that you are sure not to miss. Add this cathedral to your list of places to see in Copenhagen. You will be glad you did. There is the carillon that is both huge and beautiful, the Christiania and the tower. A walk around the church will certainly make your day.

The Opera House
This is the national opera house sitting beautifully at 41,000 metres. It has great architectural features such as limestone, mable, gold and so on. It was designed by a Danish architect, Henning Larsen along with other Danish artists. The opera house is a mixture of culture and history and the canal around it is great for sightseeing. You can get into the opera house and view stunning performances.

Søerne
Søerne refers to three lakes strategically following each other. It is a hard to miss feature of Copenhagen and one its oldest clearly defining the town’s topography. Søerne provides a sustainable way to relax and truly enjoy Copenhagen. It also leads to the district of Nørrebro where you will get to see most of the sustainable shops. Water is a beautiful way to relax and enjoy nature and Søerne provides just that. You can perform a few activities here like jogging, boating or taking long walks.

Nørrebro
Nørrebro is an entire neighborhood with lots of sustainable shops. You can walk around the streets and watch the students flock by. You can get in here after a warm day from Søerne. If you love to see a burst of creativity, this should be the place for you. There are lots of shops around the road and the streets are known for late nights. There’s always a bar that’s open somewhere in Nørrebro. You can even get a coffee shop nearby.

The streets are all yours all year long.


Vesterbro
Vesterbro is another district with lots of sustainable shops that you don’t want to miss. You can easily move from Vesterbro to Tivoli Gardens which is just a walk away. You can walk down to Istedgate Street too. Vesterbro is a great place to relax and enjoy some Danish food. This district has been described as the place to be in Copenhagen. It has a blend of history ranging way back to World War II. The mix of history, culture and food that you will be enjoying is absolutely stunning.

You can visit this district whenever you want!
